Frequently Asked Questions
Sub-Zero refrigerators are well known for their quality and durability, but like any appliance, they can sometimes develop problems. If you notice an issue, it's a good idea to contact MD Appliance LLC. Staying aware of common problems can help you spot them early. Here are some tips to help you troubleshoot frequent issues with Sub-Zero refrigerators.
What should you do if the temperature rises in your Sub-Zero refrigerator? Before calling for service, check a few simple things.
- Check Temperature Settings - The recommended setting for the fresh food compartment is 37°F, while the standard setting for the freezer is 0°F. Older Sub-Zero models, such as the 200, 300, and 500 series, have dial controls. Set the dial to 5, where 1 is the warmest and 10 is the coldest.
- Check the Doors - Make sure the doors are completely closed and not left open for an extended period. Activate the door alarm to confirm the doors are shutting properly. Remove any obstructions inside that could prevent the door from closing.
- Check the Door Gaskets - Inspect the door gaskets for any cracks, wear, or looseness. Damaged gaskets can cause the unit to work harder and less efficiently due to air leaks. Replace the gaskets if you find any damage.
- Condenser Cleaning - Condenser cleaning is essential for the proper operation of the Sub-Zero refrigerator. Over time, dust accumulates on the condenser, blocking the airflow and making the unit work harder. It makes compressors overheat, which leads to temperature inconsistencies.
- You should clean the condenser every six months and replace both the air and water filters.
There might be several reasons why your Sub-Zero ice maker is not making ice. The most common issues include a frozen ice maker tube, a defective ice maker, or a faulty water inlet valve. Additionally, low water pressure or a warm freezer temperature can result in low or no ice production.
For optimal performance, the water pressure should be between 20-100 psi or 35-120 psi, depending on your specific model. It is also important to set the freezer temperature to 0°F; if the temperature exceeds 15°F, the Sub-Zero ice maker will not produce ice.
The issues with your ice maker can often be resolved quickly without needing to call us for service. Here are some steps you can try before calling for service.
- Change the Water Filter Regularly - We recommend changing your water filter every 6 to 12 months, depending on usage. Make sure to purchase certified Sub-Zero water filters. Many aftermarket refrigerator water filters are available online, but they often perform poorly.
- Check the Ice Bucket - Make sure the ice bucket is correctly placed inside the freezer. The ice maker only switches on when the bucket activates the switch.
- Check the Fill Tube - Make sure the fill tube is not frozen. The fill tube gets blocked with ice due to either low water pressure or a faulty water inlet valve. You can carefully melt the ice inside the fill tube with the hair dryer. Make sure not to overheat and damage other surrounding plastic parts near the ice maker.
- Check the Ice Maker for Other Blockages - Ensure the residual ice cubes are not stuck in between the ice maker dispensing arms. You can visually check the ice maker, and if there are stuck ice cubes, remove them carefully.
- Check the Water Supply Lines - A kink in the water line may obstruct the water supply. There may also be an accidental separation of the water line connection, resulting in a water leak noticeable on the floor.
If your Sub-Zero refrigerator is running continuously or not cooling properly, it may be time to clean the condenser coils. To ensure your Sub-Zero refrigerator operates efficiently and lasts a long time, it is recommended to clean the condenser coils every 6 months. If you have pets, you might want to clean them even more frequently.
To clean the condenser coils, follow these steps:
- - Before start cleaning, power down the unit via the control panel.
- - Take the top or the bottom grille off to access the condenser.
- - Use the soft brush vacuum cleaner attachment. Vacuum vertically to avoid bending condenser fins.
- - After you've done, reinstall the grille back and power up the unit.
The refrigerator is currently running to maintain the desired temperature. If there is an issue with cooling, it will operate for a longer period than usual. If you notice that your Sub-Zero refrigerator is running longer than normal, there are a few steps you can take before calling for service.
- Check the condenser and make sure it is not covered with dust - Clean the condenser regularly, every 6 months.
- Check the condenser fan motor - Make sure the condenser fan motor is running. If not, call for service.
- Check the temperature - Regularly check the temperature inside the freezer and refrigerator. If the temperature remains high for several days, contact a service technician.
- Check the door gaskets - If the gaskets are damaged, temperature issues may occur due to air leak, causing your fridge to run longer.
